Wall openings for MEP installations

This script will automatically create round and rectangular wall openings for Cable trays, Ducts and Pipes. The script contains so many features but there is also room for improvement.

Because the most common relation between architectural and MEP model is over the Revit link the script is able to retrieve elements from the Revit link model.

The script is able to calculate dimension of the each element, insulation (if any) and the user-required offset. The total dimension will actually be the wall opening.

The user can specify the dimension below which the script will ignore the creation of the wall openings (this is especially useful for small pipe diameter).

Please make sure that before you start using this script that you back up your existing project model.

Also, if you want to download this (and all other scripts) with my sample files please visit the Shop page.

The script uses the following Dynamo packages:

archilab v.2021.25.21
Data-Shapes v.2021.2.92
Clockwork v.2.3.0
BimorphNodes v.3.0.3

  1. Thanks for show this great script.
We are electrical engineers and need this script with inverted Model linking.
The main model (host) is the electrical model with cable trays. The linked model is the architectural model.
All Models on Autodesk Construction Cloud.
    Is this possible?
In Open BIM projects we generate Opening as families and pass it to the architects as IFC or DWG.
Often they do not work with Revit. We would buy the script.

  2. Hi

I have the same question as Gianfranco had.

The difference is that I work in a HVAC model and would like something that would make/indicate openings for pipes/ducts, in certain walls and floors/ceilings which is modeled in the linked architect model.

    Is this possible?

    Best regards,
    Benjamin H. Y.

      1. Hi Again

        Sorry for the multiple messages.

In the architectural model, there is for an example,
        a “Basic Wall – Conc-160mm” and a “Basic Wall – Conc-80mm”
Will it be able or can the script be edit to only make openings in the “Basic Wall – Conc-160mm”
I only ask becouse in the video like it makes openings in all wals.

        1. Hello Benjamin,
I would need to test if the script can work in Revit 2020 and let you know. Regarding the question about the type of the wall, we can adjust the script to cut only the wall types that are allowed (which would require creating an Excel list of walls that can be cut) or specifically specify the wall type we want to cut. The script is not available in the “Access to all scripts” package. It was a custom script developed based on client requirements. You can see the list of available scripts in that package on this page: https://dynamoscripts.com/dynamo-scripts-shop/

          Best regards,
          Nenad

          1. Hi Nenad

            Thank you for the answer.

Is it possible to get a price and time estimate for that custom script?

And ” (which would require creating an Excel list of walls that can be cut)” is it possible that edit the list? or is it something I have to hand over to you before.

      Hi Nenad,

Does this script works in Revit 2019?

Is it possible to have a price for this script individually?

      Thanks,
      Alexandros

      1. Hello Kelvin,
I created the script in the version Revit 2021 but if you have the latest version of Revit 2020 (it should be 2020.2.9) I assume that it will work.
Yes, you can edit the script for your family just make sure that your family have the same parameters that I have or change the parameter names in the Dynamo script.

        Best regards,
        Nenad

    2. Hi Nenad,

I am now using the script, it is great for!! But i have a problem, can it justify to use in active view? May i seek for your help?

      Many thanks
      BR,
      Kelvin

    3. Hello, very good scripts, a question, in my company we use revit 2024, I would like to know if it is compatible with that version or in any case confirm if it is compatible with versions from 2021 onwards
